A €329 Rekkord F100 automatic turntable and a €184,798 Acoustic Signature Invictus NEO get filed under the exact same label here: vinyl playback. Neither is more “correct” than the other — both do the identical job of turning a groove cut into a spinning disc back into music. What separates them is how many of the physical problems in that chain each one solves, and how far it goes to solve them.
Playing a record is a four-stage relay, and every product in this category is one of those four stages. A turntable spins the record at a constant speed. A tonearm holds a cartridge at the correct angle and tracking force as it follows the groove across the disc. The cartridge itself does the actual conversion: a stylus traces the groove’s physical wiggle and a magnet-and-coil system (moving-magnet or moving-coil) turns that motion into a tiny electrical signal. A phono stage then amplifies that signal — often 40–60dB of gain — and reverses the RIAA equalization curve that mastering engineers apply when cutting a record, restoring normal tonal balance before the signal reaches a line input. Skip or weaken any one stage and the other three can’t fully make up for it.
Rekkord Audio is a useful example of how much history sits behind a seemingly ordinary turntable. Its factory in St. Georgen, in Germany’s Black Forest, opened in 1907 and built Dual turntables from 1982 until the original Dual brand ended production there; when Audio Tuning acquired the plant’s operator, Fehrenbacher, in 2021, Rekkord Audio was created to continue that same automatic-turntable manufacturing tradition on the same equipment, with roughly 99% of components still sourced locally. Acoustic Signature, by contrast, is a newer German company (founded 1993) that scales one engineering approach — massive, vibration-damped platters and its AVC magnetic drive system — from the entry-level Merlin NEO up to the reference Invictus NEO and its own TA-10000 NEO tonearm.
Phono stages carry their own, separate lineage. Lehmann Audio was founded in Cologne in 1988 by Norbert Lehmann, a sound-engineering student who — in his words — noticed that “two amplifiers with identical specifications” could sound worlds apart, and traced the difference to circuit detail rather than to the spec sheet. That instinct produced the Black Cube, one of the most widely used phono preamplifiers of the past three decades, still sold today alongside Lehmann’s newer Silver Cube and Decade models. Gold Note and Acoustic Signature take a more tiered approach, scaling gain, RIAA-curve options and outboard power supplies across a full range rather than building around one signature circuit.
Because these four stages depend on each other — cartridge output has to suit the phono stage’s gain, tonearm mass has to suit the cartridge’s compliance — decide on your budget split across all four before comparing individual products by price.
Vinyl playback is the process of converting the physical vibrations stored in a record’s grooves into an amplified audio signal. It requires four components working together: a turntable that spins the record at constant speed, a tonearm that positions the cartridge, a cartridge that converts groove vibration into an electrical signal, and a phono stage that amplifies that signal and applies RIAA equalization before it reaches a standard line input.
Not necessarily — many turntables, including most Rekkord Audio models, come with a pre-fitted tonearm and cartridge. But every component still has to be matched: a heavier tonearm suits a lower-compliance cartridge, and a phono stage needs the correct gain and loading for that cartridge’s output.
