Bose Corporation acquires StreamUnlimited Engineering GmbH
A corporate giant in domestic, car, professional (formerly) and portable audio world for more than 60 years, Bose Corporation is one of the most known brands in audio. In 2024 Bose acquired a portfolio of luxury audio brands, including McIntosh and Sonus faber, and this groundbreaking industry event was covered in these pages (Bose Corporation to enter luxury audio market, buys McIntosh Group).
StreamUnlimited, founded in 2005, is a technology company specializing in providing software solutions and hardware modules for connected audio and IoT products. The company operates globally, partnering with major semiconductor companies and technology providers in the consumer electronics industry.
StreamUnlimited history brief
StreamUnlimited, an LLC from Vienna, Austria, was founded in 2005 by former Philips employees. In 2017 Google bought about 41% of its shares from majority shareholders, Markus Rutz and Frits Wittgrefe. Not surprising, since for many years StreamUnlimited voice recognition technology was applied within several well known applications and products: Google Chromecast, Amazon Alexa and similar.
For hi-fi audio industry StreamUnlimited GmbH was the flag bearer of Philips’ achievements in audio hardware, specifically CD-drives for audio, since Philips abruptly stopped producing such hardware around 2010–2012 — demand for mass market needs dwindled, and specialty audio market was too small. StreamUnlimited Optical Storage (SUOS-HiFi) was formed to address the production of high end CD drives but from 2024 SUOS-HiFi apparently has become a separate company in Vienna, Austria and is headed by Felix Jirousek.
Also StreamUnlimited is one of the very few providers of high quality audio streaming software and hardware. Its hardware and software solutions are used in streamers, DACs, active speakers, and the like. The company also makes mono and stereo class D amplifier modules in partnership with Hypex.
StreamUnlimited has nearly 120 employees in several locations, including Austria, Czechia, China and other countries.
What use Bose Corporation has for StreamUnlimited?
The acquisition of StreamUnlimited point to an expansion of Bose’s B2B activities. While the American parent company is primarily known for its consumer audio products, with Stream Unlimited onboard, the option of integrating or licensing Bose’s own technologies to other manufacturers feels viable.

The management teams seem to confirm that (quotes from official press-release):
“As connected ecosystems scale and become more complex, how devices work together is a central driver of value,” said Nick Smith, president of Bose Audio Technology and chief strategy officer. “StreamUnlimited has built a trusted position at the center of this coordination layer, where interactions between devices are defined and orchestrated. We’re excited to welcome their team to Bose as we bring our capabilities to more partners, products, and experiences.”
Bose’s Audio Technology business brings more than 60 years of audio expertise and proprietary innovations to partners across industries. By packaging and licensing its capabilities, including Sound by Bose technology and the Bose WaveForm Audio Engine, the company enables partners to deliver differentiated, high-performance audio experiences that are seamlessly integrated within their own products.
“We look forward to joining with Bose as we expand StreamUnlimited’s offerings and accelerate the development of next-generation intelligent audio experiences for our customers,” said Frits Wittgrefe, CEO at StreamUnlimited. Markus Rutz, CTO at StreamUnlimited, added, “There is a significant opportunity to further advance the orchestration capabilities at the core of our platform, enabling more seamless, adaptive and AI-driven audio ecosystems. This will unlock broader access to new streaming technologies, services and capabilities, positioning us for continued growth as the market evolves.”
What happens to StreamUnlimited clients after acquisition?
According to Bose, StreamUnlimited is expected to continue to operate independently and will support both existing and new customers as usual.
