Understanding Cartridges: Signal Conversion, MM vs. MC Designs

A cartridge converts a groove’s physical wiggle into an electrical signal — and depending on how it does that, the same record can sound subtly different. That’s the argument for treating the cartridge, not the turntable, as the single component with the most influence on viny!

Two designs dominate. Moving-magnet (MM) cartridges attach a tiny magnet to the cantilever and read its movement through fixed coils; they’re rugged, produce a usefully high output of a few millivolts, and their styli are typically user-replaceable. Moving-coil (MC) cartridges reverse the arrangement – the coils move, the magnet stays fixed — which lowers moving mass and can improve tracking detail, at the cost of a much lower output signal that needs a compatible phono stage input. Ortofon built the first practical MC cartridge in the late 1940s; MM designs became the mainstream default through the 1960s and 70s because of their higher output and simpler compatibility.

Gold Note‘s range makes that trade-off explicit. Across its Donatello, Machiavelli, and Tuscany MC lines, the “Red” version uses a copper coil for a higher output (0.5-1.8mV, often usable with MM-only phono stages), while the “Gold” version uses a silver coil for a lower-output, more detailed signal that needs a proper MC input. Acoustic Signature, by contrast, builds its MCX1 through MCX4 as a straightforward moving-coil range scaled by price and materials, mirroring its turntable and tonearm tiers.

A phono cartridge holds the stylus that reads a vinyl groove and converts its mechanical vibration into an electrical audio signal. Moving- magnet (MM) and moving-coil (MC) are the two dominant designs,
differing mainly in output voltage and moving mass.
