It’s about what they have in common – every product in this category takes digital audio data, whether from a disc, a network, or a file, and gets it ready for a hi-fi system to play. Vinyl doesn’t belong here because there’s no data to retrieve; a stylus reads a physical groove directly.
That common job used to have one obvious answer: a CD player. The compact disc, launched in 1982, was for two decades simply what “digital source” meant. Streaming and downloadable files changed that gradually through the 2000s and 2010s, and network audio players arrived to read from a home network or an online service instead of a disc tray – but the underlying task never changed: retrieve digital data reliably, then hand it off cleanly.
